What did our client need?

The Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (GEIC) is a £60 million investment at The University of Manchester, which will establish a state of the art research and technology facility for the development of graphene and related 2D materials.

The GEIC will focus on industry-led application development in partnership with academics. It will fill a critical gap in the graphene and 2D materials ecosystem by providing facilities which focus on pilot production, characterisation, together with application development in composites, energy, solution formulations and coatings, electronics and membranes.


How did we help our client?

Connect 2 Cleanrooms won a competitive tender to design and build an ISO Class 6 cleanroom within the GEIC for the development of transfer processes of graphene and other 2D materials onto useful substrates, like glass or plastic for flexible electronics.


How did our client benefit?

We designed and delivered a cleanroom to meet the GEIC’s URS, a 9m² cleanroom with three hardwall sides and one softwall for access and material transfer. Robust enough to meet particle counts and air changes to Class 6 as detailed in ISO 14644-1:2015, the modular cleanroom is flexible enough to be relocated or extended as needs within the GEIC change.

The procurement and installation process was seamless and we were very pleased. Connect 2 Cleanrooms was flexible to our needs when we needed it and it was very speedy. We see this as the start of a relationship, as and when our cleanroom needs grow or change.
